Obsession (2026) Full Movie Recap

Full scene-by-scene recap with analysis.

Full Recap

Introduction

Few horror films in recent memory have struck a nerve quite like Obsession (2026), the breakout supernatural thriller from writer-director Curry Barker. Blending the classic "be careful what you wish for" premise with a razor-sharp look at modern dating anxiety, the film follows Bear, a shy young music store clerk who has spent years too afraid to tell his close friend Nikki how he really feels about her. When an ordinary night turns into a moment of desperate impulse, Bear makes a wish on a strange occult trinket — and the consequences unravel every relationship in his life.

At its core, Obsession is a meditation on consent, control, and what happens when affection is forced rather than freely given. It asks a deceptively simple question: if you could make someone love you unconditionally, would the "love" you get back even be real? Anchored by a physically and emotionally demanding performance from its female lead, the film uses supernatural horror as a lens to examine very human fears about rejection, codependency, and the thin line between devotion and obsession. Below, we break down the entire story in the order it unfolds, from the first spark of longing to its blood-soaked conclusion.

Chronological Plot Recap

A Crush Too Afraid to Speak

The story begins with Baron "Bear" Bailey, a socially awkward young man working at a local music store alongside his close friend Nikki, and their mutual friends Ian and Sarah, whose father Carter owns the shop. Bear has been quietly in love with Nikki for years but can never bring himself to say so. His already fragile emotional state worsens when he comes home one evening to discover his cat has died after accidentally ingesting his prescription painkillers.

Looking for a way to cope — and hoping to find a gift for Nikki — Bear wanders into a local crystal and oddities shop. Instead of the necklace he intended to buy, he leaves with a peculiar item called the "One Wish Willow," a novelty toy rumored to grant a single wish to whoever snaps it in half.

The Wish That Changes Everything

That night, after a group hangout with their friends, Nikki finally works up the nerve to ask Bear outright whether he has feelings for her. Frozen by fear and habit, Bear once again fails to tell her the truth. Overwhelmed by frustration and longing, he snaps the One Wish Willow in his car and silently wishes that Nikki would love him more than anyone else in the world.

The change is immediate and unnerving. Nikki suddenly returns to his car, asking to stay the night and claiming her estranged father is dying of cancer. Later, in bed, she kisses him passionately — only to pull away, screaming, as if something inside her is fighting back.

Love, Too Fast and Too Strange

The next morning, Bear finds Nikki building a strange memorial out of his dead cat's remains. She brushes off her erratic behavior from the night before as the result of taking MDMA. Despite the odd start, the two finally confess their feelings for each other and begin dating, and for a brief moment, Bear believes he's living his dream.

That illusion cracks quickly. While the couple is out on a date, their friend Ian calls to reveal that Nikki had privately told Sarah she saw Bear only as a "little brother," and that her story about her dying father was a lie. When Bear confronts her, Nikki responds with sudden, disproportionate anger. That same night, he wakes to find her standing over his bed, watching him sleep, sobbing and accusing him of not loving her enough.

The Cracks Become Impossible to Ignore

The following day, Bear discovers Nikki has duct-taped the front door shut to stop him from leaving, and later realizes, to his horror, that a sandwich she made him contains his late cat's ashes. Panicked, he calls the customer service line for the One Wish Willow, hoping to undo his wish. He's coldly informed that the spell can only be broken by his death — right before a shrieking Nikki is put on the phone, sending him into a full panic. When he returns home, he finds she has stood frozen in place the entire day awaiting him, covered in her own bodily fluids.

A Party Turns Violent

Despite Ian's objections, Nikki insists on joining Bear at a party at Ian's house. During a drinking game, she recites a disturbing, violent story she's written, unsettling everyone in the room. When Bear is dared to kiss the person seated beside him — Sarah — Nikki violently shoves Sarah aside to kiss him herself, then suddenly screams and stabs herself with a broken bottle. Bear rushes her to the hospital, but she refuses treatment, and he brings her home instead.

A Warning, and a Murder

Later that night, Sarah asks Bear to meet her at a nearby park. Before he can leave, a suddenly lucid Nikki tells him that her obsessive "other self" is asleep for the moment, and she begs him to kill her while he still can. Offended rather than moved, Bear refuses and leaves to meet Sarah.

At the park, Sarah reveals that Nikki and Ian have secretly been hooking up for two years, and warns Bear that Nikki may be using him purely to hurt Ian. As Sarah begins to hint at her own feelings for Bear, Nikki reappears, smashes the car window, and brutally kills Sarah on the spot. She then calmly tells Bear to go home while she disposes of the body.

Desperate to Undo the Wish

Reeling with guilt, Bear buys every remaining One Wish Willow from the shop, hoping one of them will let him reverse what he's done — but he can't bring himself to break any of them. In desperation, he confesses everything to Ian and begs for help undoing the curse. Ian doesn't believe him and mockingly makes his own wish for a billion dollars — and cash immediately rains from the ceiling, proving the magic is real.

The Final Night

Bear rushes home with his last One Wish Willow, planning to have Nikki break it to end the nightmare, only to discover Sarah's mutilated body inside the house. Nikki, now dressed in Sarah's clothes, turns a gun on both herself and Bear. Ian arrives moments later and is shot dead instantly.

Terrified and cornered, Bear locks himself in the bathroom. He considers shooting himself, but instead swallows a lethal dose of leftover painkillers, then tries — and fails — to force himself to throw them back up. As Nikki finally breaks the last One Wish Willow, the spell's pull draws Bear out of the bathroom to kiss her one final time before he collapses and dies from the overdose.

The Wish Breaks

With Bear dead, the curse controlling Nikki instantly shatters. Heartbroken and prepared to take her own life in the moment before his death, she instead regains full control of her body the second his wish expires. The real Nikki — the person who existed before any of this began — awakens surrounded by the corpses of her closest friends, utterly horrified by what her body was forced to do while she had no control over it. The film ends with her alone, alive, and shattered, left to somehow carry the unbearable weight of everything that happened.
