Verity (2026) Story Breakdown & Ending Explained

Act II: Living in Verity's Shadow

Lowen settles in and dives into Verity's files, hoping to absorb the voice she must imitate. She works in Verity's office and sleeps in the main bedroom, and she starts to see herself inhabiting Verity's life. The line between researcher and replacement begins to blur.

Jeremy's own behavior adds to the unease. When Lowen asks which of Verity's books is his favorite, he admits he never read past her first novel. "I didn't like being in her head," he says, and he shuts the conversation down. Later he confesses that Verity never read Lowen's novels at all. It was Jeremy himself who read them. The offer that brought Lowen to Vermont rested on a lie.

Back at the house, Lowen and Jeremy kiss, and Lowen thinks she sees Verity watching from the shadows. They end up sleeping together, and Lowen imagines herself as Verity during the encounter.

Act II Turning Point: The Manuscript Changes Everything

The story turns when Lowen finds a hidden autobiographical manuscript, "So Be It," among Verity's papers. It reads as a private confession, and the Verity it describes is chilling. In its pages she intentionally unplugs the baby monitor and lets her children cry while she goes back to sleep. She also describes deliberately causing the death of her daughter Harper. The manuscript says her plan to win back Jeremy's affection failed, because he was too consumed by grief to show her any.

Lowen is horrified. She starts to suspect that Verity's paralysis is an act. When Verity is brought to tears, she does not react or move, and Lowen becomes certain Verity is faking. She urges Jeremy to stop caring for his wife, but he does not understand what she knows. Lowen holds back the manuscript, torn between protecting him and the dangerous secret she carries.

Climax: The Truth Comes Out

Lowen finally gives Jeremy the manuscript. He reads the section in which Verity kills Harper on purpose and rushes into her bedroom to confront her. Verity abandons the act and springs into action. She insists she can explain everything and asks him to hear her out. Jeremy does not listen. He attacks her and tries to kill her, and Lowen's intervention cannot reverse the damage. Verity dies.

Final Resolution: The Cover-Up, and the Letter

Jeremy and Lowen put Verity's body in the lake, mirroring how Harper died, to make the death look like an accident. They then tearfully speak to the police after the body is recovered, lying that Verity left the house on her own.

Months later, Lowen is pregnant and still with Jeremy. She brings home the newly published next novel in Verity's series, which makes her its sole author. Then Crew tells her about a hiding spot he shared with his mother. There Lowen finds a hidden letter from Verity to Jeremy. It says that if Jeremy is reading it, Verity and Crew are somewhere safe. It recasts the manuscript as "antagonistic journaling," an exercise in writing the opposite of her real feelings.

Lowen destroys the letter before Jeremy can read it. The film ends with Lowen, Jeremy and Crew driving away toward their new life. Her closing voice-over leans toward the belief that Verity was a manipulative liar. The audience is left to decide whether the manuscript or the letter was the truth.

Critical Review & Analysis

Verity is a film at war with its own tone. Showalter plays the material as pulpy, wink-at-the-audience melodrama, and the performances share that heightened register. Hathaway's mix of menace and vulnerability keeps the central question alive, and Johnson's flat, dreamy delivery suits a protagonist who gradually becomes someone else's double. Hartnett plays Jeremy as a man whose grief makes him easy to steer.

The pacing is its strongest asset. The manuscript sequences pull the audience into Verity's head, which is not a pleasant place to be, and the slow build to the confrontation is satisfying. Critical reception has been mixed, with the film holding about 41 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and some reviews found the mystery thin and wished it had gone weirder. Others praised its faithful, campy energy.

Thematically, the film asks who gets to control a story, and whether a written confession is ever reliable evidence. Its most daring choice is the ending. Verity's death is not a clean victory, because the letter casts doubt on the justice Lowen and Jeremy believe they served. The film leaves that question open and trusts the audience to argue over it.
