You Can See Everything (2026) Story Breakdown & Ending Explained

Those conversations quickly reveal the film’s central puzzle. Holmes calmly maintains her innocence. She says she has never told a lie in her adult life, and she defends past claims about the Edison blood-testing device through careful wordplay. Her argument is that the machine could run the promised tests and that the shortfall lay in the chemistry, not in what she said. Fielder compares talking with her to Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First?” routine. When Holmes says she has never heard of it, he plays it for her on YouTube. She watches without any visible reaction.

Act II: Inside the House

As the days pass, the camera shifts toward Evans. He comes across as controlling, to the point of taking a whisk out of Holmes’s hands so he can beat the eggs himself. He explains her behavior by saying she simply thinks differently. He also reveals that the couple wants to revive the Theranos vision as a new, laser-based venture. In his telling, Holmes has vowed that everything she does for the rest of her life will build “monuments of love” to him.

Holmes’s parents visit. Her father admits he once worked at Enron. He also starts to suggest that her former partner, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, may have taken advantage of her. Evans abruptly shuts that conversation down.

Fielder then gets the couple to watch the Hulu series The Dropout with him in bed on a laptop. When a scene shows the Balwani character buttoning Holmes’s blouse and telling her not to look too pretty for a presentation, Holmes can’t keep watching. She breaks down in Evans’s arms.

The film also takes on a disputed 2023 New York Times interview, in which Holmes was reported as saying that actors portraying her were playing a character she had created. The couple insist she said “they” created it, and claim their own recordings prove this. They never produce those recordings.

Two more moments in this stretch matter later. At a meeting with Fielder, Oppenheim, and A24 executives, Holmes leaves to check on the children, and while she is out of the room Evans asks for a share of the film’s box office profits. Separately, Holmes invites Fielder to swim with her in the ocean. He declines, saying he is normally afraid of cold water.

Act III: Prison and the Hall of Mirrors

About 90 minutes in, the first chapter ends. Holmes rides tearfully in an SUV to the federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas. Fielder watches from a car as she is escorted inside.

The film then jumps forward to 2025 and becomes a different kind of movie. With Holmes unreachable, her public image is now in Evans’s hands. He posts from her Twitter account without saying that he, not Holmes, is writing. He approves an AI model of her likeness without worrying about how it might be used. He allows billboards that use a photo she had said she hated.

Fielder goes to the home of Amanda Seyfried, who won an Emmy for playing Holmes in The Dropout, and shows her the footage. Seyfried is fascinated and agrees to play Holmes again, this time in reenactments of real moments. Christopher Abbott is cast as Evans to recreate the profit-sharing meeting, and Oppenheim plays himself. Seyfried also reads Holmes’s complaint that the series made her life harder because viewers treated it as fact. Seyfried pushes back hard: Holmes, she says, is in prison because of her own actions, and The Dropout was television.

Climax: Confronting Billy and the Prison Visit

Seyfried joins Fielder to visit Evans and the children. The meeting turns tense. Evans has power of attorney over Holmes and controls her social media, and he confirms that she doesn’t know about his request for film profits. He predicts she would see his choices as more monuments of love. Without warning, he puts Holmes on speakerphone, and a flustered Seyfried tells her she’s amazing.

Evans then becomes an obstacle. He insists that a recorded phone call could get Holmes moved to a higher-security facility, so Fielder plans a prison visit without telling him. He times it carefully to avoid Evans’s regular visits. Because cameras are banned inside, Fielder and Seyfried rebuild the visit from his memory, working through a script by firelight. The film cuts between these planning sessions and the staged reenactment.

In the reenactment, Holmes is unbothered by the tweets and the AI model and says she trusts Evans’s judgment. When Fielder asks whether she knew about the profit request, the script has her say she knew Evans was talking to Fielder about “it.” Seyfried reads that as complicity. Fielder hesitates, says he now remembers the word as “something,” and asks for the line to be changed. That single word shifts how guilty she looks. Holmes then echoes Evans’s monuments-of-love language almost word for word, and Seyfried wonders aloud about Stockholm syndrome. Fielder says he sensed only genuine love, and he leaves the visitation early so the family can have time together.

Final Resolution

Seyfried then asks Fielder whether he left out anything manipulative because he cares about Holmes. He insists he is only trying to be accurate. She smiles and says it’s very complicated.

The film then cuts back to 2023 and shows something it had held back: Fielder did swim in the ocean with Holmes, laughing. In its closing moments the film shows Holmes at an outdoor prison visitation area with Evans and their children. On-screen text reveals that Evans later declined any box office profits from A24. The disputed New York Times quote returns as the last words before the credits.

CRITICAL REVIEW & ANALYSIS

You Can See Everything is two films joined at the prison gate, and the join is deliberate. The first half works as excruciating cringe comedy. Fielder’s usual awkward, deadpan persona gets nowhere against Holmes’s unblinking sincerity, and for once he is the most normal person in the room. Static, tightly framed, carefully lit shots make the beach house feel like a stage set. The camera presses into faces as if closeness could force the truth out.

The second half is the bolder achievement. Once Holmes is gone, everyone starts constructing her. Evans uses tweets and an AI, the press uses a disputed quote, Seyfried uses performance, and Fielder uses selective memory. The swapped word and the withheld swim show the documentary admitting its own bias, which is rare for the form.

The ambition has costs. At nearly three hours, the middle stretches can feel indulgent. Some critics argue the film leaves out trial evidence and investor harm, which risks softening a subject whose actions hurt real patients and investors. Still, the film never offers an apology on Holmes’s behalf. Its real argument is about perception: every portrayal is partial, including this one. The result is provocative, frequently funny, and genuinely unsettling, and it will keep audiences arguing well after the credits.
