Liam is conspicuously absent from these opening scenes. When he finally walks in, he does his job professionally, but the brothers barely speak, and the editing lets that silence hang in the air. The tension is real. In one of the film's most talked-about early moments, Liam slips out of the room before the final chord of "Champagne Supernova" has faded, a small act that says more about the fragile peace than any interview could.

Liam explains that he has approached the comeback with respect for the songs, giving up drinking and smoking so his voice can carry them. Noel hears the difference. The rehearsals shift from wary to focused, and the film settles into a rhythm of two men circling each other while the music does the talking.

Act II, Part One: How It Fell Apart

Before the tour begins, the film pauses to remind viewers why anyone doubted this reunion. Using the band's iconic branding for its chapter titles, it races through the early rise: the Manchester streets, the television appearances, the home videos, and the concerts that turned a scrappy group into one of the biggest bands on earth. The montage is fast and deliberately breathless, building momentum toward the moment everything broke.

That moment is Paris, 2009. The band was due to play the Rock en Seine festival, but a backstage altercation between the brothers ended the night before it started. An announcement told the waiting crowd that the show was off, and Noel walked away from the band for good. Looking back, Noel calls the way it ended disgraceful, and neither brother tries to dress it up. The film treats this as the wound the entire reunion has to answer.

Act II, Part Two: The Tour Takes Shape

The film then moves to the stage. On opening night in Cardiff, the crowd erupts the instant "Hello" begins, and Noel admits he was so overwhelmed that he nearly needed a moment to step away and breathe. From there the documentary hops across the world, showing how each city gave the tour its own personality.

In Manchester, fans gather at a spot the film calls Gallagher Hill. In Poland, the crowd's Poznan dance becomes a running joke and a source of delight for Liam, whose playful antics earn some of the biggest laughs. At Croke Park in Dublin, the audience's singing echoes a beloved Irish folk tune while Noel and Bonehead are seen in tears. In Asia, a cardboard cutout of Bonehead stands on stage, a funny and touching stand-in. Stadiums like the Rose Bowl and River Plate appear as proof that the reunion has become a global event.

Along the way, the brothers' relationship softens. Noel says he had forgotten how funny Liam is. The two start messaging each other and spending time together off stage, something that never happened during the first era of the band. Fans also get their own moments, with testimonials from people of every age who describe what the music means to them.

Act III: Mani and the Emotional Turning Point

The film's emotional peak arrives with the death of Mani, the Stone Roses bassist and a close friend of the Gallagher family. The news reaches the tour while it is on the road, and the directors have said the grief was felt by the whole crew. The film honors him with real care, including footage of the Stone Roses, a band that first inspired Liam to start making music.

The tribute lands hardest in São Paulo. During the outro of "Live Forever," Noel turns around, which he does not normally do, and plays while looking at an image of Mani. It is a quiet, devastating scene that reframes the reunion. This isn't only a comeback; it is a reckoning with time, loss, and the friends who are no longer there to share it.

Climax and Resolution: Forgiveness Without an Apology

The documentary refuses to stage a tearful confrontation. Instead, the reconciliation comes through small gestures: the brothers laughing together, walking onstage hand in hand, and sitting side by side to talk about each other with real affection. Noel sums it up by saying it was all forgiven without a word being said, a line that some critics find moving and others find a little too convenient, since the film never shows whatever conversation happened in between.

The final reveal reframes the narration itself. The voiceovers from Liam and Noel that run through the film came from an interview they gave sitting next to one another the whole time. In the closing moments, Liam delivers the film's simplest thesis, that Oasis saves, and the story ends not in Paris with a broken guitar, but on a stage full of light and a crowd full of voices.

Critical Review & Analysis

Don't Look Back in Anger succeeds because it understands its audience. The pacing is confident, building slowly through tense rehearsals before releasing its energy in the stadium sequences, where the songs are allowed to play at length rather than being chopped into snippets. The sound mix is a highlight, with crowd voices booming behind every chorus.

The cinematography is functional rather than groundbreaking. Concert scenes lean on waving arms, crowd shots, and tight close-ups of Liam's face, a limited visual vocabulary that the music more than compensates for. The heavy use of montage can occasionally feel like a highlight reel, and the film avoids hard questions. Critics have noted that anyone hoping for inside dirt on the feud or the mechanics of the reunion will leave unsatisfied, and that the film also sidesteps the commercial scale of the tour.

Where it excels is character. Liam and Noel are a natural double act, funny, guarded, and quietly emotional, and their commentary carries the film. The tribute to Mani is its most affecting stretch, and Bonehead finally gets recognition as the band's secret weapon. As a portrait of estranged brothers, it is generous rather than probing. As a celebration of what live music does to a crowd, it is close to irresistible. For fans, it is essential viewing; for newcomers, it is a warm, entertaining introduction.
